100 Seattle high school students were asked 11 simple 6th grade level questions. Only 3 out of the 100 could answer all 11 questions.
The questions addressed basic skills and knowledge such as arithmetic, English grammar, and geography. One question was to name the countries that border the USA. Half of the students guessed Europe and Africa, a handful knew that Canada is just a short drive north of their city, but almost none of them knew that their country shared a border with Mexico to the south!
The superintendent of schools was shown the results and claimed to be surprised that the products of his schools were so completely unprepared for life in our modern high tech civilization.
Of course, these products of modern education were also totally devoid of any of the knowledge and understanding necessary to be meaningful participants in what's left of our democracy. They couldn't name their current Governor or the Speaker of the House, but the liberal educational establishment that so completely failed to impart any useful skills, had managed to "teach" them that republicans are bad people and teachers "deserve" higher salaries.
The head of the NEA, an organization that has focused its efforts on reducing teacher's working hours and the length of the school year while raising salaries and protecting its members from teacher competency testing, just quit to work directly for the Democratic National Party.
