Wasted Opportunities
ABC News recently did a segment on the results of "Project Choice". 14 years ago a multimillionaire put up his own money to guarantee a fully paid college education to 1400 poor minority 9th graders in Kansas City. The only requirements were that the students graduate from high school, and not mess up their lives with drug abuse.

100 Seattle high school students were asked 11 simple 6th grade level questions. Only 3 out of the 100 could answer all 11 questions.
The questions addressed basic skills and knowledge such as arithmetic, English grammar, and geography. One question was to name the countries that border the USA. Half of the students guessed Europe and Africa, a handful knew that Canada is just a short drive north of their city, but almost none of them knew that their country shared a border with Mexico to the south!
